Citizens Advice Launches Dedicated Dementia Support Service in Rochdale and Oldham

Citizens Advice Stockport, Oldham, Rochdale and Trafford (SORT) is proud to announce the launch of its new dementia support service, now available in Rochdale and Oldham.

The service is designed to ensure that people living with dementia-and their families-receive the financial and practical support they need to live well and independently.

Around 30,000 people are estimated to live with dementia in Greater Manchester. Many of them, along with their families, struggle to access the support they are entitled to, including key benefits such as Attendance Allowance, Carer’s Allowance, and Pension Credit, which remain significantly underclaimed and add to financial pressures.

“Living with dementia is challenging enough without money worries,” says Paul Steer, Health and Wellbeing Account Manager at Citizens Advice SORT Group. “We want to give families peace of mind by reducing financial pressures and helping people live well and independently for as long as possible. To make that happen, we’re embedding ourselves in local communities and offering home visits when people need that extra support.”

At the heart of the new service is a dedicated specialist caseworker, offering one-to-one support for people living with dementia and their carers. This includes tailored welfare rights advice, income maximisation, and guidance on issues such as debt, housing, and energy costs.

The project takes a collaborative approach, working closely with organisations such as Age Concern, Alzheimer’s Society, the NHS, and local authorities to identify and assist those in need of support. By partnering with existing services, Citizens Advice SORT Group aims to ease financial pressures and give families the stability to focus on what matters most: care, dignity, and quality of life.
